IneB I have the same concerns re: importing regulations and I just wrote a post about it on oberlo also.
However this website helped me understand it all a bit better along with alot of other things I've read and people I've spoken to: http://www.chinaimportal.com/aliexpress/
It covers alot of detail about importing from China. Although I have a drop-ship store (in fact I have a few) I'm now starting to think even though they do make me some money.. it's such a huge risk to you and your customers I'm not really sure it's worth it or the best business model moving forward.
Sounds to me unless Shopify & Oberlo can somehow come up with a solution to this drop-shipping from China / Aliexpress product regulations/safety issue it's a very risk business model. I'm not sure how they can come up with a solution to that hurdle.. but it's a very serious one and only thing that would stop people using the Shopify + Oberlo + Aliexpress business model would be to be educated in the risks they're taking doing so.
All those people claiming to make 10K a month and I know some who really do, however they could be slapped with a lawsuit tomorrow and be broke again (and potentially have their house taken). You can get business insurance of course.. yet this doesn't cover everything or have a LLC set up however, do you really want to put your customers unknowingly at risk too? I know I don't.
Hence I don't think Shopify & Obelo would bother with such a huge complex issue and potentially a financially costly one to figure out how to navigate and implement it for their customers - if people are still using their model unaware of the risks they're putting themselves in. Plus we're liable they are not so it's legally ok for them and really it ultimately falls on our shoulders to meet those import regulations for the products we sell so it's really not their responsibility as they are not the business owners.
However if people were educated they'd probably be less likely to sign up to use shopify and oberlo with aliexpress for sure so they'd probably only do it and find a solution IF people got scared off in large numbers because of the risks - as their business relies on Aliexpress dropshipping currently so they'd be forced to do something about it.
It's a great idea don't get me wrong I think shopify + oberlo are fantastic - both are wonderful platforms and they do try their best - guides etc are great and it would be extremely difficult for them to find a way to make sure us as store owners can use Aliexpress risk free they'll always be some risk however.. I think when I started as a newbie I was completely unaware of this and I think Shopify & Oberlo have a responsibility to their customers to make us aware of those potential risks we could face importing goods from Aliexpress.
Maybe they have and I've missed I don't know.. but hopefully they make newbies aware and people already selling who are unaware also of the risks they're actually taking to their business, themselves and others by not meeting the import regulations and safety standards of the countries they're selling into.
