What makes the difference between a product that won’t sell and one that flies off the shelves? Hype is a big part of that, so today’s article is going to chat about how to build excitement around a product you’re selling. And remember, just because you are dropshipping, doesn’t mean you can’t use these same principles!
Who are my customers?!
Let’s chat about your audience to start! Once you have chosen a product you want to sell, think about who you want to sell it to. Who is the audience that will be buying this item? What kind of groups or events do they participate in? These are just some examples, but really take the time to get to know your customer.
How to reach out
Now that you have figured out who would likely be buying your item, let’s explore ways you can reach out to them and build the excitement.
One great way is blogs. If you have an active blog on your shop, with followers, start blogging about a new product you are releasing. Talk about the benefits of it, what it will do to improve your customers lives, or whatever else you think will make people excited about the product.
This can also including being featured on someone else’s blog! If you don’t have a strong blog following yourself, perhaps you can reach out to someone who does, and collaborate with them. You can send them a free item before launch, and they can leave a review about it for you.
On the note of sending items, influencer advertising is also a route you can take! If you follow any specific youtubers, or instagram stars that you think would be able to promote your product, reach out to them and ask them if they would be willing to do so. Sometimes it will cost a fee to do it, but it may be worth it if you are tapping into their audience.
Email is another platform you can use. You can send updates on the stats and launch date of the product. Build the excitement however you can, and don’t forget email is a great way to do it!
The power of mystery
One tactic you can take is teasing your audience! Show sneak peeks of your product (example, a close up photo showing a small part of the item), behind the scenes footage, etc. There are many ways you can build hype by leaving a bit of mystery behind a new product launch.
If at all possible, think about having the product promoted early at an event. As an example, if you are selling beauty products, you could get into a convention or event happening that is about beauty, and take pre orders there. You can even have a few on hand to sell at the event only. Just because you are dropshipping, doesn’t mean you can’t tap into events like this.
Video demos for a product is a great way to build excitement. If you can show how your product works, and what it will be like to own it, that can really help engage your customer. So add this on the product page or on a blog post.
A big strategy shops will use to build hype is offering limited quantity. If people are excited about your product, and they know only 100 items will be released, they are likely to buy from you as soon as possible. If they know there will be lots of the item available, they may decide to take their time with the purchase, and put more thought into it. So definitely consider this next time you want to launch a product.
Though you may not get as many sales as you would have wanted by only offering a limited quantity, you are in turn building up excitement with your customers, so that they look forward to the next item to be released. And that in turn brings back repeat customers.
All in all, just because you are dropshipping, does not mean you cannot make your product launches exciting and sought after. It’s a fun way to engage with your customers and build up a community that everyone is eager to be a part of!
Please do share if you have had success building hype in other ways. I would love to know what worked for you and what did not! Happy dropshipping.
