Product reviews in ecommerce translate to customer trust. Think about the last time that you purchased something online, did you check for reviews? I know I do! I want to see what other customers thought about the product as deciphering from a few pictures and a description is difficult. Unlike in store where you can touch and feel before you buy, you can’t do that online.
Additionally, when you’re dropshipping you as the merchant also don’t control the product so you too are simply basing your expectations on the images, descriptions and most likely the product reviews. In short, positive reviews build trust and help customers to make that final push to purchase!
positive reviews = more customer trust = more sales
Now the question you may be asking is how to get those reviews. You’ve got two situations, you’re a new store and literally have no purchases or you’ve got sales rolling in and a customer list.
For new stores you need to get a little creative. And no, this does not mean writing fake reviews as that isn’t going to help anybody. If a customer senses fake reviews they are most likely to not purchase and not return to your store as you’ve ruined their trust.
The first thing you can do is locate your supplier or the product on Aliexpress.com. On Aliexpress if the product is quite popular you will see reviews from customers all over the world and many of them even include pictures. Even if the product is coming from a different supplier if it looks exactly the same there is a good chance they are sourced in the same place. This isn’t perfect but a great place to get started until you get sales rolling in - hopefully this will help!
Ali Reviews is an app that allows you to import reviews straight from Aliexpress so you can use them on your store and don’t need to re-write anything! An absolute must when you are getting started. Not only will this build trust but it will also build the illusion that your store is bringing in a lot of traffic and others are purchasing from there.
Otherwise if you’ve got some customers and sales already then it is time to ask them to leave a review! This way not only can you get authentic reviews you can also get real feedback from your customers. If they had a great experience than they will be likely to leave a positive review, if they did not you have the option then to rectify the situation and see how you can turn that into a good experience and another sale down the line.
Shopify also created a Product Reviews app that you can install directly onto the product page. You can request any customer to leave one. You can choose as well whether or not you want these auto-published. Don’t worry, if you’re fretting a customer who waited too long will leave something negative you have the option to check it first and delete it. You can also import reviews so if you had another dropshipping store can use those as well.
Now, in terms of getting the reviews you’ll want to make sure that you reach out to customers right after they have received their product and are excited about it. This way they will be more inclined to leave one. Let’s face it, a positive review does your business a huge favour. Get creative by offering a discount for a review or doing a giveaway. Since your customer is going out of their way to do this for you make sure you show them how much you appreciate it by treating them and enticing them to come back. If they get a discount that will go to their next purchase at your store.
Make sure you also monitor all your social media accounts for subtle comment reviews. Just because there isn’t a star rating doesn’t mean it is not a review that another customer would trust and read! A comment on Instagram or Facebook about the product is also a review. You’ll want to make sure you monitor all engagement with customers and treat any comment about the product or experience purchasing it as valuable feedback.
Beyond using reviews just as a tactic to bring in more sales, use it as data to enhance your store. If a certain product is getting negative reviews then it is either time to source from a new supplier or replace it with something else. If someone complains about long shipping then maybe it is not clear enough on your store. There are numerous apps that allow customers to leave reviews in different and unique ways that may be better tailored to your brand or business (I will link them all here). However it is important to remember that the information your customers leave is invaluable and listening to everything they have to say (the good and the bad) will bring in even more sales and allow you to scale with a returning customer base!
