Enticing customers with a discount or promotion is a great way to gain new customers, and bring in additional sales from previous customers. With that in mind, I wanted to share some different ways you can utilize a discount code, so that you can explore which option is best for you!
Before we hop into where you can share a discount code, let’s go over how to create one.
Creating a Discount Code
If you are logged into your Shopify admin, head to the discounts tab on the left, and select create discount code :
From there, you can create whichever kind of code you like - whether a dollar amount, percentage off, or shipping discount. Feel free to check out this article here from Shopify, which walks you through the options you can set up, as well as how to create these.
After you have the code created, here are some ways you can share it!
Have you been capturing emails from orders or through a newsletter signup? If so, one great way to share a discount code with customers is through a blast email! Here is a great example from Sephora:
As you can see, they promote a limited time discount, and provide a code that can be used to receive the discount. You can get quite creative with these emails too, here are some examples of scenarios you can offer them in:
- customers who spend over a specific dollar amount
- new customers
- discounts for a specific holiday or promotion
- a discount for leaving a product review
- an abandoned checkout email discount
There are plenty of scenarios, but those are just a new to name!
If you don’t have an email platform you work through to create emails yet, I would recommend checking out Mailchimp! It’s an awesome platform that allows you to create custom email templates, and send that email out to a list of subscribers. They offer free plan tiers, and are quite intuitive to use.
Explore what options work for you, but definitely don’t forget to tap into the email marketing avenue!
You can promote a discount code by adding it to a banner at the top of your site! I recommend using an app like Quick Announcement Bar as it is free to use, and offers customizations to suit your site.
In this example, Shop Dixi added a promotional message about their sales. You can use something like this to showcase a discount code:
Using a banner allows customers to easily access available promotions, and entices them to buy to be able to use the discount.
On the note of banner discounts, you can also make use of a newsletter pop up! These are great to use to gather emails for a newsletter signup, or you can use a pop up to offer discounts upon customers leaving the site.
Here is an example from Shop Dixi again, where they ask for your email in exchange for a discount code:
Share discounts on social media! If you have an Instagram or Facebook page, as two examples, for your business, you can offer exclusive promotions and discounts available only on your social media pages. It’s a great way to reward your social media followers, and keep them interested in following you on these platforms. Here is a great example from Nora Swimwear:
Last, but not least, if you plan on sending free product to influencers to review, you can also leave them with a discount code that can be shared with their followers! That way anyone who sees their review on your product can use an exclusive discount to purchase your items.
I see this quite often on Youtube tutorials or reviews, so it’s just another way to potentially use a discount code if you wanted other options!
There are plenty of other ways to make use of discount code offers, but hopefully these inspires you to promote your shop and available sales in a new way! If you have any other suggestions on ways you have used a discount code, please let me know in the comments below - I would love to hear what ways you promote your shop!
