Using POS with Oberlo Products
Did you know that you can use Shopify’s POS (Point of Sale) to sell products in person? More importantly, did you know you can use it for products sourced from Oberlo as well?
Shopify’s POS software is used to sell in person from an iPad, iPhone or Android device. This can be especially useful if you are going to an event where you feel that a physical presence could result in some potential sales/customers. There are a couple different possible scenarios where you could use the POS for Oberlo products:
Today, I’m going to show you how to get started by setting up Shopify POS and how process orders for Oberlo products. Let’s get started!
Setting up POS
Below, I’ll link the appropriate guides from Shopify’s Help Center to get you started with using Shopify’s POS. The information below will walk you through in detail what is required to get started.
Step 1 - Read this general overview of how POS works
Step 2 - Go through Steps 1 to 8 to fully setup POS
Step 3 - Setup how you want customers to be able to pay you
Step 4 - Read this guide on how to handle transactions
Step 5 - Decide what hardware you want to use to sell from POS
Note: You also can sell from POS without using any additional hardware if you want directly on your mobile device or iPad. You can see how to do this right here.
Fulfilling POS Orders
Normally, Oberlo presumes products will be purchased online and then you will pay the supplier to ship the products to the customer. Since using POS somewhat goes outside of Oberlo’s usual expectations for processing orders, some special care needs to be given to how you are fulfilling orders.
Note: The fulfillment settings mentioned below on POS aren’t related to fulfillment settings in the Shopify admin. They only control how fulfillment is handled for POS orders.
Below, I will cover how to process orders for both potential scenarios for selling products in person via POS:
Option 1: After the customer pays in person, you are having the products shipped to the customer by the supplier
This process will look very similar to how you process orders online. To start off you need to make sure automatic fulfillment is turned off for POS orders. Automatic fulfillment will stop the “Order Products” button from appearing in Oberlo, which you will need to pay suppliers. This is controlled here:
Then, once you have an order from a customer, you can fulfill the order normally as shown in the guides below:
Option 2: You’re in physical possession of the products
In this situation, you have the actual products on hand and will be giving them to the customer after they pay you. To do this, you would have had to request for the supplier to ship the products to your previously, you can see how to do this in this guide here.
Similar to online purchases, the order will appear in Oberlo for you to pay the supplier. You don’t need to do this though since the customer was already given the product(s) in person.
To fulfill the order you’ll want to make sure your POS settings are set to automatically mark the order as fulfilled. This will remove the “Order Products” prompt in Oberlo so you won’t accidentally order the products from the supplier. This will switch the orders to a “Fulfilled” status in Shopify and a “Shipped” status in Oberlo, which is technically true since you’re handing the products to the customer in this case. This setting will look like this:
If you happen to have this turned off during the order, you can always accomplish the same by marking the order as fulfilled like so:
Note: This is one of the only situations where you would need to mark something as fulfilled. It should only be used when it’s a POS order where you have the product on hand.
You’re now ready to sell in person! Previously you were likely selling to only online customers, but now you can sell in person too! Thanks for reading!
