Questions to ask yourself when starting your own business!
Getting your business started can seem like a big task, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to get you started in the right direction.
Have I Done the Research?
Choosing what to sell is really important for your business of course, and you want to make sure you are choosing something you not only have a genuine interest in, but also something that has a good market waiting for you to sell to. Often times people want to sell everything that is popular, and while that can be done it can be very hard when you get to marketing your business. Imagine having to market 10 different products to 10 different groups of people that are all very different. It can be expensive and time consuming. This is why choosing a niche is the best thing to do.
When choosing a niche you want to choose something you have a general interest in since you’re going to be working with these products for a while. It’s easier to stay motivated to work on your business and store when you love the products you are selling.
It will also help when doing the research for these products. If you have to research products you already have some knowledge in then half the work is gone. With that said you want to make sure you are researching other stores, price points, brand styles, and most importantly who is buying these products. I love to use Google Trends to find out who is looking for what on the internet. Not sure how to use it? Watch this video that give you a walkthrough.
Do I Have a Plan?
Now that you have a better idea about what you’re selling it’s time to start making a plan. Creating a business plan does not need to be complicated or hard. Having a business plan will keep you focused on in the right direction. It will also help you keep track of your goals for your business, and it’s something you will go back to over and over again. How Much Do I Want To Spend?
Isn't dropshipping amazing? The amount of money we can save on creating a business is crazy sometimes. Of course you do need to make sure you are setting a little bit aside for your Shopify subscription, marketing, and sometimes test products for your store. You don’t have to spend a lot of money but that means you might have to put in more time into your store and marketing. Any money you invest into your business now is money you are investing into your future. It will all be worth it when you start making your first sales.

Do I Need to Read the Help Docs?
Well….yes. The best thing any business owner can do is be ready for their first customer. This involves making sure you have browsed the Shopify Help Center as well as the Oberlo Help Center. Both platforms have really good help docs to walk you through almost every aspect, but the most import ones to look at are:
These are important because you don’t want someone to make a purchase and you’re not prepared to sell to that location. You also don’t want to have something go wrong with shipping your products and have an upset customer, and most importantly you want to make sure you are not losing any money on any of your sales! Be sure to browse the other docs as time goes on as they are all very helpful.
Last But Not Least, Am I Ready?
If you have gone through all these questions and feel confident then yes you are! The most important thing to remember about launching your store, is things aren’t going to be perfect and they don’t have to be. Being an entrepreneur means taking chances and not being afraid to hit a bump in the road. Bumps are not the end, it just means we have to get up and try something new and be open about learning from our mistakes.
